Elected mayor Hon. Abraham Peña Nieves took office today in front of a small, but diversified crowd, at the Youth Center in Downtown Dewey.
The ceremony started twenty minutes after the appointed hour (the invitation said 10:00 a.m). Honorable Johnny Méndez, elected to the House of Representatives, took his place at the stage followed by Lic. Roberto Bonano. The new mayor was escorted to the stage by the members of the city assembly, Milagros Santiago, president, Judith Romero, vice president, Carmen M. Parrilla and Alexis N. Bermúdez. It is interesting to know that most of the city assembly members are women and teachers at the local public school.
Shortly after the swearing ceremony, the newly elected mayor gave a short speech to the audience. “Let’s walk together united by hope and faith,” the mayor said, “that is the way brothers and sisters should walk. That is the way Culebra can step forward.”
After the ceremony, lunch was served. The menu, consisting in different kinds of yellow rice, chicken, pork, baked ham, pasta salad and piña coladas was catered by Luis Grundler and his mother, from Ocean View.
