Usually I deliver the news that goes on within the walls of our island’s City Hall and the upcoming projects.  This issue, however, will be a little different, to celebrate St. Valentine’s.

St. Valentine’s Day will be full of surprises as the Public Schools prepare their annual Red Pageant, to celebrate love and friendship.  Classes will be held till noon and after lunch, the students, teachers, parents and the community will gather at the Plazoleta (school stage) to enjoy the musical program around 12:30.  Thanks to our school’s academic counselor, Mrs. Mariluz Perales, for organizing it.

At the other side of town, El Centro de Envejecientes also have their annual pageant around 9 – 9:30a.  Members select the King and the Queen of Hearts and go out there to meet the people.  Watch out for the Royal Couple as they go by town and make sure to stop and say hello to them.

Hopefully Cupid will be also on the streets selling roses, in the form of Culebra’s own messenger, Chefa López.  Galería de Regalos and its owner, Mercedes, have fresh roses to sell and Chefa goes anywhere to deliver them, wings and all.  So if you forgot to get your sweetheart a present, catch Chefa on the streets and get a rose while the supply last.

These are the news for today, folks! And just before I go, I leave you till next week with this meditation from Paulo Coelho:

“When we love and believe in something from the bottom of our soul, we feel stronger than the world and we are imbued with a serenity that comes from the certainty that nothing can conquer our faith. This strange force makes us always make the right decisions at the right time, and we are surprised at our own capacity when we fulfill our objective.”

New requirements for the scholarship program were discussed in a meeting on Thursday, February 4 at the City Hall.  The program was created back in the nineties to give a monetary incentive to those high school graduates and adults pursuing a college career.  Ten members of our community were chosen and approved by the assembly to act as a committee.

The eligible candidates are given a monthly check that can be used to cover their expenses, whereas it is travel or school supplies.  To be in the program, the candidates must have the following requirements: college or technical school transcript, prove of residence and a 2.50 GPA.

For more information on the Scholarship Program you can call City Hall at 787 742 3116.

The gym will now be open until 8:30p for open gym.  The weight room and sauna are open from 7a to 8:30p.

AEROBICS!   Classes are being given form 5 to 6 Monday through Thursday in the gym.

Abandoned cars will start to be removed from the streets.

New Hours for City Hall:

Open to the public, from Monday through Friday, from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm

For more information, keep reading our new section, From the Mayor’s Office, where Hon. Abraham Peña will keep you posted on public views, projects and anything that goes on the City Hall.  Since the new administration just started, please be patient while we settle in.  Throughout the week, we will post as the information comes.

Thank you for your patience!
